Wordsmiths from across the region are being invited to share the stage at this year’s High Wolds Poetry Festival, as the popular event returns to Bishop Burton later this month.
Now in its eighth year, the free-to-attend annual festival will take over Bishop Burton Village Hall on Saturday, 26 September, running from 10am to 5pm. Supported by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Arts Council England, the day celebrates writers of all experience levels—from seasoned, published poets to complete beginners stepping up to the microphone for the very first time.
This year’s creative theme is ‘Weaving Words, Harnessing History’, inspired by the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry in the UK and its historic link to Stamford Bridge.
Alongside a full lineup of recitations, visitors can enjoy homemade, locally sourced food and refreshments throughout the day. Attendees will also be able to pick up a copy of the festival’s annual poetry collection, featuring works from many of the day’s performers, available for a small donation.
Festival Director Sarah Mills said: “The High Wolds Poetry Festival has gone from strength to strength in its eight years and I can’t wait to see our poets take to the stage and perform.
“It’s a delight to provide a space for poets of all abilities to engage with poetry in rural settings, which makes this event unique in the area. It’s a wonderfully friendly day and I look forward to welcoming new faces and our long-standing supporters.”
Councillor Nick Coultish, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, added: “This is a fantastic event to bring poetry into the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds. We highly encourage interested residents to find out more and get involved if they can.”
