A major £86.9m highway scheme outside Beverley is entering its final stages, with the A1079 and Jock’s Lodge roundabout set to fully reopen to traffic.
After two-and-a-half years of construction, traffic restrictions on the A1079 will be removed on the evening of Friday, September 11, allowing the A1079/Jock’s Lodge roundabout and its approaches to fully reopen.
Restrictions on the A164 will remain in place for the next few weeks while the final works are completed. Once these are removed, the entire scheme will be open.
The A164 and Jock’s Lodge Improvement Scheme, the largest development ever undertaken by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, was designed to tackle congestion at one of the area’s busiest road junctions and improve journeys between Beverley, Hull and the wider East Riding.
Work began in January 2024, with major improvements being carried out along the A164 between Beverley and Skidby roundabout, as well as the A1079 Hull to York route.
The project has seen the construction of a new dual carriageway on the A164, a new road bridge at Bentley carrying traffic over a new link road, and a new roundabout on the A1079.
Contractor GRAHAM, working on behalf of the council, has also dramatically reshaped the landscape, moving more than 660,000 tonnes of earth along the four-kilometre project.
The scale of the work includes:
- More than 7.5km of road surfacing
- More than 3km of drainage
- Seven new drainage ponds
- Around 128,000 trees and shrubs planted
- Six new crossing points for pedestrians and riders
- More than 3km of improved cycle paths
- A new 3km public right of way
Councillor Michael Lee, East Riding Council’s cabinet member for housing, infrastructure and communications, described the project as a “monumental task”.
He thanked motorists for their patience during the construction work and said the improvements would bring smoother journeys along the route.
The project has been funded through £40.7m from the Department for Transport, with East Riding of Yorkshire Council contributing a further £46.2m.
However, drivers are being warned that traffic restrictions will remain on the A1079 towards Kingswood. These are linked to separate National Grid works and are not part of the Jock’s Lodge improvement scheme.
