A phased programme of work is set to get underway on Saturday Market in Beverley early in January.
The work begins on Monday 5th January and will take place daily between 7am and 6pm to enable the current temporary layout on Saturday Market to be made permanent.
The temporary layout involved the creation of a pedestrian area and fewer parking spaces.
It’s expected the work will be finished Sunday 7th June. There is no alternative route for traffic affected by the closure.
The road will be closed to all traffic but will be open to pedestrians and for vehicular access to properties affected by the closure and emergency services.
An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson said that both motorists and pedestrians should see improvements to Saturday Market once the 20-week project is completed.
“East Riding of Yorkshire Council is in the process of upgrading part of Saturday Market in Beverley, to improve pedestrian access,” said the spokesperson.
“The council has secured external funding for this project, which will ensure parking areas are clear to visitors and more accessible to pedestrians, especially those with limited mobility.
“This includes rearranging the blue badge holder spaces to allow better visibility and space for vehicles driving around the adjacent corner.
“The existing cycle stands, and large wooden benches will be retained and further new seating, planters and bollards will also be installed.
“Additionally, East Riding of Yorkshire Council are taking the opportunity to carry out maintenance work to other areas of failed block paving within Saturday Market at the same time to reduce future disruption.
“To minimise this disruption, the works are planned during the quieter months and are envisaged to start on site 19th January 2026 and have an anticipated duration of 20 weeks.
“Affected residents and businesses will shortly receive an information letter about the works with further details.
“We thank businesses and residents for their patience during this period.”
