Tributes are pouring in for the late Councillor Peter Astell, the former mayor of Beverley, hailed as a ‘true one-off.’ His sudden death marks the loss of a beloved figure whose impact on the town went well beyond the realm of politics.
His influence reached beyond town borders, as he participated in numerous committees, enhancing residents’ lives and strengthening the democratic voice of local councils.
In May 2023, Peter Astell achieved another milestone, being elected to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council for the Minster and Woodmansey Ward, a position he served with unwavering dedication.
Described by the Beverley Town Council as a “true one-off,” Peter’s passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who knew him, including Town Council officers and elected members. Thoughts and condolences are extended to his partner Julie and his son Tom, who now carries on his father’s legacy as the current Mayor of Beverley.
In addition to his public service, Peter Astell was a familiar face as a former caretaker of the Aldi Store on Swinemoor Lane.
He also actively participated in community initiatives, including the Beverley Barge Preservation Society and The Yorkshire Wolds Railway, showcasing his commitment to preserving East Riding’s heritage.
Peter’s proudest moments were arguably as a member of Beverley Town Council and later, on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, where he served alongside his son, Tom Astell. Tom, following in his father’s footsteps, not only inherited the mantle of public service but currently holds the esteemed position of Mayor of Beverley.
The East Riding Liberal Democrats also expressed their grief, remembering Pete Astell as a passionate and long-serving campaigner.
Eliza Whitaker, Pete’s fellow ward colleague, spoke fondly of his love for the role: “Pete adored being a councillor and had thrown himself at the role since he, Tom, and I got elected together in May.” Pete leaves behind partner Julie and son Tom. His sudden departure has left a significant impact on the Liberal Democrat family, and he will be deeply missed.
A celebration of Peter’s life will be held at St Mary’s Church, Beverley on Friday 29th December at 11am followed by private interment at Bridlington Cemetery.
