A heart screening day tested 100 young people for undetected health issues on Valentine’s Day, at an event organised by a local netball club in memory of their coach.
White Cross Netball Club began fundraising for the event after Graham Johnson, died of a sudden heart attack, aged 59.
Players teamed up with the charity Cardiac Risk In The Young to screen 100 people aged between 14 and 35 at Leven Sports Hall on Tuesday 14th February.
Organisers Ellie Mills and Rebecca Taylor told Beverley Life: “A huge thank you to the CRY team for travelling to Leven for hosting our first event. What a great group of people, who worked so hard to get everyone screened.
“We are so incredibly grateful and overwhelmed by the support we have received.
“To get 100 people through the door and screened is a great feeling. We appreciate everyone’s patience and also all the lovely comments and messages we have received.
“This was an emotional day for the family and club but we are proud to honour Graham’s legacy. We would like to thank everyone who has helped us raise the money for screening.”
Players from local sports teams and other community groups were invited to undergo an electrocardiogram – a simple test that can be used to check your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity.
The painless tests took a few minutes to complete and were performed by qualified cardiac physiologists.
Some candidates were followed up to have an additional echocardiogram, an ultrasound of the heart.
The netball team had raised the £5,000 needed to hold the screening day by holding a 24-hour netball marathon in September 2021, with adult and junior players participating in matches.
